Der Eisenrost
Line-up: Chu Ishikawa - metal percussion/program, Joe Yabuki - metal percussion/bass, Kouhei Chiba - metal percussion/drums, Shinichi Kawahara - metal percussion, Shinichi Seki - metal percussion/guitar/vocal.
Chu Ishikawa picked up his first synthesizer at the age of 15, and entered the music scene with his first band at the age of 18. The alternative metal percussion unit, Zeitlich Vergelter, received a warm welcome from the indie scene, alongside bands such as the Ruins and the Boredoms.
After their break up, Chu continued as a solo percussion artist, and wrote his first soundtrack in 1988 for the cult classic "Tetsuo", directed by Shinya Tsukamoto. His work was hailed worldwide for its Armageddon-esque feel. He was of course selected to work on the sequel, "Tetsuo II/Body Hammer", where Chu pursued the expressions of metal acoustics with his self made instruments. (The soundtracks are compiled in the CD "Tetsuo/Music by Chu Ishikawa", released October 1992.) For Tsukamoto's new film, "Tokyo Fist", he was asked to compose without his precious metals, but nonetheless came through with a brilliant soundtrack.
Chu's creative energy is funneled into his newest band, Der Eisenrost, a punk/alternative/industrial metal percussion quartet. Much is in store, as he is currently involved in numerous musical ventures, writing for films, plays, games, and even fashion shows.
So, Der Eisenrost was formed in April 1993. And since then, they have been appealing their metal-percussion with heavy alternative rock and punk musical style to audience. In 1995, the band released live and studio mixed CD "Armored Weapon" from Japan Overseas label. In 1998, Der Eisenrost released "Tokyo Fist" on CD. It was soundtrack of Shinya Tsukamoto's film "Tokyo Fist". After that, the DVD "Tokyo Fist" (D.E.R.'s live video by Shinya Tsukamoto special tracks) was released. The band played at many clubs and musical festivals. Their audience always said something like "You are cool and so crazy!" or "Your style is only you style!". The band's line-up: Ishikawa, Yabuki, Chiba, Kawahara and Seki. Joe Yabuki. On the Japanese underground-scene, he is very famous bassist. He is required for playing at many bands. He joined SXSW, Lollapalooza with the band Pugs around the United States. It is often said that his sound is mixed of ideal and xxx. Kouhei Chiba. He makes rhythms, Jazz, R'n'B and heavy rock. He gives his heavy drumming, leading sequential rhythms at Der Eisenrost. Shinichi Kawahara. Kawahara is an actor, assistant director of Tsukamoto's films. His performance has his original taste with his dynamic physical expression. Shinichi Seki. He played in many heavy rock bands and electro-body units. His guitar edges Der Eisenrost's sounds with it's sharpness. It has two faces, noisy, but orderly by right techniques of his long career. Der Eisenrost's metal percussion instruments are all made by Ishikawa. He has made so many instruments from metal scraps such as engine tank of a truck and wheels of motorbikes. At their live performances, the metallic beats generate more speed and tension than "Tetsuo" film. Read more on Last.fm.
